An inspiring example
Financial inclusion is one of the essential foundations of contemporary cooperative dynamics.
When a financial institution adopts an explicit social mission, it becomes an actor capable of sustainably transforming territories, particularly in rural areas where populations often remain distant from traditional financial services.
The recently established partnership between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Centenary Bank Malawi illustrates this ambition and offers an inspiring example for actors engaged in cooperative approaches.
Cooperation built on trust
The signing of a 7.5‑million‑euro financing agreement marks an important milestone for Centenary Bank Malawi, a young institution born from the Centenary Group and the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.
This support from the EIB is never insignificant: it follows a demanding due‑diligence process, ensuring strong governance, coherence of the social model, and the bank’s capacity to reach the most vulnerable groups.
The value of this partnership lies in the very structure of the financing, divided into three complementary components:
- The first targets micro‑agricultural enterprises and farmers, strengthening their productive capacity and supporting a resilient local economy;
- The second focuses on the economic empowerment of women and youth, two groups whose potential for social transformation is widely recognized;
- The third concerns technical assistance, essential for consolidating internal skills, improving processes, and ensuring sustainable implementation.
Acting close to real needs
This integrated approach aligns with the principles of cooperative methodologies: acting close to real needs, strengthening local capacities, and creating favorable conditions for active community participation.
By supporting farmers, women, and youth, Centenary Bank Malawi contributes to a development dynamic that does not rely solely on access to credit, but on a broader vision of social justice and economic dignity.
For cooperation actors, this partnership is a reminder that finance can become a powerful tool when it is guided by a clear mission, supported by committed governance and strong territorial anchoring.
It also shows that international institutions can play a decisive role in supporting ambitious local initiatives, provided these demonstrate their ability to act with seriousness, transparency, and coherence.
Building shared solidarity dynamics
The example of Centenary Bank Malawi encourages continued reflection on cooperative financial models and the promotion of alliances that strengthen social inclusion, support rural communities, and open new perspectives for populations at the base of the pyramid.
Thanks to all the actors who made this "partnership" possible.
The signing ceremony between the EIB and Centenary Bank took place in Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa, on September 15th, 2026.
