The fragile progress made in education over the past two decades, particularly in increasing girls' access to school, is threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to UNESCO projections, nearly 24 million children and young people, including 11 million girls, may not return to school. Girls aged 12 to 17 are particularly vulnerable to dropping out of school in low-income countries. Inequality in access to education between girls and boys is largely due to gender stereotypes, which, in this area as in many others, keep women—50% of humanity—in a subordinate position.
