The French Federation of Social and Sociocultural Centers (FCSF) is undoubtedly one of the French associations with the most significant social impact. It brings together several thousand social centers and community spaces, involving millions of people throughout France. Social centers are often misunderstood.
Their purpose is not to provide social assistance to the most disadvantaged, but to help people develop their *empowerment*, in other words, to understand the problems they encounter in their social environment and to develop collective actions to solve them.
Produced in partnership with the FCSF, issue 23 of Approches Coopératives analyzes the history and objectives of social centers in France and gives a voice to those involved in their development: management staff, activists, and local elected officials in several French cities.
